Blunt Force Illumination
Work in Progress 2013-
Blunt
Force Illumination
is a sculpture/installation in metal and glass that examines the
interplay of the environment, economy and society within the framework
of sustainable development. This work is part-three in a trilogy of
environmentally themed installations and is preceded by: Invasive
Species (2000-02), which illustrates the mass extinction of species
and the evolution of our natural environments; and A Piece of the Pie
(2005-06), which examines the expansion of world consumption.
Preliminary design work/studies have focussed upon the icosahedron
form--- constructed from either 20 equilateral triangles or 12 circular
frameworks. Each of the frameworks will house compositions in broken and
cut class, layered in and around metal assemblages. As production
advances, other polyhedrons will be explored. The sculptures will be
illuminated from the inside with integrated lighting and will be brought
together within an exhibition space to form a floor to ceiling
sculpture/installation.
As a found object artist for well over a decade, I have observed the
world from the bottom up and I am continually amazed with our patterns
of consumption and blatant disregard for the limitations of our
resources. While I could continue to use my means of expression to
point out the obvious, there are many examples of sustainable design and
development that offer hope in the preservation of an inhabitable
environment. Blunt Force Illumination focuses upon the
optimism of these bright ideals.
